Best time to visit Plitvice Lakes
No single month is best for everyone. The park is open all year, but the season decides three things: which lakes you can see, what a ticket costs and how much rain to expect. In winter the upper lakes are normally closed. From about April the full routes are possible again, depending on the weather.
Prices follow the same calendar. An adult day ticket in peak summer costs four times as much as in winter. Details for each month are on the Plitvice Lakes tickets page.

The seasons compared
Adult day ticket prices for 2026.
| Season | Months | Adult day ticket | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | January to March, November and December | €10 | Lower lakes usually accessible, upper lakes normally closed |
| Spring and autumn | April and May, October | €23 | Full routes possible again from about April, shorter ticket hours in autumn |
| Peak summer | June to September | €40, or €25 for a late slot | Longest hours, highest price |
The late slot applies after 16:00 in June to August and after 15:00 in September. For most visitors who want all the routes without paying the top price, April, May and October are the middle ground. If price matters most, accept the winter limits on the upper lakes.
Weather through the year
Long-term averages, not a forecast.
The table uses the climate station in Gospić, the nearest regional station, for the period 1971 to 2000. It is not measured at the lakes and it is not a forecast for 2026. Use it for the pattern: warm summers, cold winters and a wet autumn. High and low are monthly means of the daily highest and lowest temperature.
| Month | High °C | Low °C | Rain mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 3.3 | −5.0 | 101.8 |
| February | 5.4 | −4.2 | 98.8 |
| March | 9.7 | −1.1 | 95.2 |
| April | 13.5 | 2.5 | 108.9 |
| May | 19.0 | 6.5 | 108.4 |
| June | 22.5 | 9.4 | 95.4 |
| July | 25.2 | 10.9 | 60.4 |
| August | 25.4 | 10.5 | 83.1 |
| September | 20.8 | 7.5 | 140.4 |
| October | 15.3 | 4.1 | 156.5 |
| November | 8.5 | −0.4 | 175.4 |
| December | 3.9 | −3.7 | 141.9 |
July is the driest month and November the wettest. That says nothing about water levels or free boardwalks on a given day. Pack rain protection for autumn and warm layers from November to March.

Each season in detail
What changes on the ground.
Spring
The upper lakes normally reopen in early April, depending on the weather, so do not plan a fixed date. April and May cost €23 for an adult day ticket. Rain is common in both months, with 108.9 mm in April and 108.4 mm in May in the long-term table.
Summer
June to September has the top price tier. The late slot is the cheaper way in, at €25 for adults. Summer is the warmest and, in July, the driest part of the year, with highs of 22.5 to 25.4 °C from June to August.
Autumn
September to November is the wettest stretch in the table. In the autumn schedule ticket sales end at 15:00. Autumn colours vary from year to year, so treat them as a possibility and not a promise.
Opening hours →Winter
The lower lakes are usually accessible and the upper lakes normally closed. That means full routes through the upper lakes, such as C, E, H and K, are not possible in the usual form. Tickets are cheapest, at €10 for adults, and hours are shorter.
Plitvice in winter →Crowds and timing
What helps on a busy day.
No fixed quiet hour
There are no guaranteed empty hours, so plan for company at the main viewpoints in the high season. The entrance you choose follows the route program you pick.
Entrance 1 or 2 →Time slots
Tickets are tied to a time slot. You cannot enter earlier, and you may arrive up to 1 hour late. Book a slot that suits your route length.
A late slot in summer
The late slot costs €25 instead of €40 for adults. Check the hours of boats and panoramic vehicles, because they run to fixed times.
