What Rastoke is

Rastoke is a part of the town of Slunj, at the point where the river Slunjčica flows into the Korana. The water drops over cascades of tufa, a soft limestone deposit, and old watermills stand right on and between the falls. It is a village of small bridges, paths and running water, not a national park.

Rastoke lies roughly 32 km from Plitvice Lakes. The distance is approximate. On the way from Zagreb, the road D1 runs via Karlovac and Slunj, so many visitors pass Rastoke anyway. If you want a guided day, look at the Plitvice Lakes tours. For the bus and car routes, see the Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb page.

How entry to Rastoke works

There is no one ticket for the whole village.

Public streets

You can walk the public streets and the public paths without a ticket. These paths are generally usable all year, but confirm on the day, especially after heavy rain or in snow.

The paid circular path

A circular path has its own entry fee. Prices can change from year to year, so ask at the entrance for the current price.

Private properties

Mills and gardens in private hands set their own hours and prices. Closing days vary, so look for the opening sign before you walk in.

Parking and traffic

The town has trialled a temporary pedestrian zone from the D1 access on the Karlovac side to the old Korana bridge, with parking outside the zone. Follow the signs on the day.

Combining Rastoke and the park

Three ways to fit it into a day.

On the drive from Zagreb

Stop in Slunj for a walk in the morning and drive on to the park. Your park ticket is tied to a time slot, with at most one hour of delay, so plan the stop with a margin.

On the way back

After a program such as A or B, which take 2 to 4 hours, Rastoke makes a relaxed end to the day. Keep an eye on the light in winter, when the days are short.

As a base

If you stay in or near Slunj, you can drive to the park. Parking fees are on the entrance page.

Entrance 1 or 2 →

In winter the park keeps the lower lakes open and closes the upper lakes. Rastoke is a good addition then, because it asks for less time. The Plitvice Lakes in winter page has the details. For bus connections, see how to get to Plitvice Lakes.

Practical tips for a visit

Small things that help on the day.

Wear shoes with grip

Paths and bridges sit right next to running water. After rain or in frost they can be wet or slippery.

Keep some time in reserve

A walk through Rastoke is short, but a stop between Zagreb and the park depends on your ticket time slot and the road. Leave a margin.

Respect private ground

Mills, gardens and houses belong to people who live here. Stay on public paths unless a sign invites you in.
