Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb at a glance

The bus from Zagreb bus station to the park stop takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and the route is about 136 km. You can book a guided day trip with transport, take the scheduled bus, or drive yourself. All three work. The right one depends on how much freedom you want at the lakes and how early you need to be back in the city.

The park ticket is a separate cost unless a tour lists it as included, so check that line before you pay. Adult day tickets in 2026 run from €10 in winter to €40 in the peak summer months.

Three ways to get from Zagreb to the lakes

Each one trades cost against freedom.

Guided day trip

The easiest option. Transport is arranged, and many trips come with a guide. Compare the start point, the time you get at the lakes and what is included. Booking through a tour is also the quickest way to avoid working out the bus timetable yourself.

Scheduled bus

The scheduled bus leaves from Zagreb bus station at Avenija Marina Držića 4. The travel time is about 2 hours 30 minutes and fares start at €15.60. Only a few buses run each day, so you need to plan the return before you choose a walking program.

Car

Follow the road signs towards the park from Zagreb. Arrive on the D429 from the Zagreb and Zadar side, or on the D1 via Karlovac and Slunj. Parking at both main entrances is paid per vehicle, with the fee collected at the exit.

Which route fits a day trip from Zagreb

With about 5 hours on the road, choose a route that leaves a margin for the return.

ProgramStartLengthTimeTransport inside the park
AEntrance 13.5 km2 to 3 hoursWalking only
BEntrance 14.0 km3 to 4 hoursElectric boat across Kozjak, panoramic vehicle
FEntrance 24.6 km3 to 4 hoursKozjak boat, panoramic vehicle, steep serpentines
HEntrance 28.9 km4 to 6 hoursPanoramic vehicle and Kozjak boat
K1Entrance 116.5 km6 to 8 hoursShort electric boat crossing

For most day-trippers from Zagreb, program A or B from Entrance 1 is the realistic choice. Both cover the Lower Lakes and the Big Waterfall (Veliki slap) and leave time to eat and rest before the bus back. The long K1 round walk is better with an overnight stay. See all programs on the hiking routes page.

Park ticket on a Zagreb day trip

Adult day tickets 2026, per person, boat and panoramic vehicle included as the program requires.

SeasonAdult day ticket
January to March, November and December€10
April, May and October€23
June to September (standard)€40
June to September (late tariff)€25

The late tariff applies after 16:00 from June to August and after 15:00 in September. The ticket includes the electric boat and panoramic vehicle for your program, accident insurance and VAT. Tickets are tied to a time slot: you cannot enter earlier, and you can arrive up to 1 hour late. If your bus is delayed, that margin matters. Full prices for students and children are on the tickets page.

How a day from Zagreb works in practice

Four decisions that shape the day.

Leave early

Your ticket is for a booked time slot, and the road takes about 2 hours 30 minutes by bus. An early departure from Zagreb gives you the most daylight on the paths, especially outside summer.

Match the entrance to the program

Entrance 1 (Rastovača) starts programs A, B, C and K1. Entrance 2 (Hladovina) starts E, F, H and K2. Check which stop your bus or tour uses and walk from there.

Entrance 1 or 2 →

Know the transport times

Boats and the panoramic vehicle end before the entrances close. Look at the last departures before you set off on a route that depends on them.

Keep a buffer for the return

Aim to be back at the bus stop well before your departure. A scheduled bus will not wait, and a tour has a fixed return time.
